Efficient and accurate travel surveys

DigitalTRS is an app that allows planning departments, research projects or consultancies to efficiently conduct travel habit surveys and traffic counting assignments. Participating citizens download the app and all journeys and means of transport are automatically logged, whether on foot, by bike, car, bus or train.

The result is far richer data than static sensors alone can offer, and enables collection over a longer period than manual counts. The result is thus a significantly better basis for analysis. DigitalTRS provides insight into the entire journey, starting point, destination and route choice, not just the passing of a starting point. Furthermore, DigitalTRS logs the traveler’s speed on all parts of the journey and the weather at the start time. Users can also answer surveys, both at initial installation and during the period.

It’s very easy to get started with DigitalTRS, after ordering you can be up and running with your first survey the same day.

DigitalTRS and privacy

Digital travel surveys can be perceived as intrusive by some respondents. That’s why Kobla takes privacy and security seriously. DigitalTRS has several built-in features that reassure users that they are in control of what data is shared. Users choose whether they want to share aggregated or detailed trips. They can also delete individual journeys or all journeys directly from the app. If they want to cancel the survey and delete all data registered, they can also do this easily from the app, all in accordance with GDPR requirements.

The data collected is only shared with the client, and Kobla deletes all registered data 20 days after the survey is completed. Data is not shared with third parties or stored for training purposes.

This approach to privacy is unique in the industry and makes DigitalTRS best in class on privacy.

Case study: Winter cycling

Oslo City Council wanted to better understand how winter operations affect bicycle use during the winter months in Oslo. They then conducted a study that combined surveys and GPS tracking using Kobla DigitalTRS. A group of 100 cyclists were recruited to better understand where they cycle and what challenges they face during the winter. Users had the opportunity to take photos of road conditions directly from the DigitalTRS app, and the photo and location were shared with the City of Oslo.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the report shows that the biggest obstacle in winter is accessibility. A lack of snow clearing on bike paths means that cyclists have to use the main road, which is a challenge for road safety and more than half of the participants had experienced unpleasant safety-situations.

Snow clearing is a limited resource and Oslo Municipality has a prioritized road network for where it should be cleared first. With GPS route data from DigitalTRS, they gained new insight into how well the prioritized road network matches where people actually cycle. This is insight that is very difficult to obtain in other ways and can help improve conditions for winter cyclists in the years to come.

The report suggests several measures that can make winter cycling easier and safer:

  • Increase the quality and scope of the prioritized operational network for bicycles
  • Ensure good accessibility on cycle lanes/cycle paths on stretches with high traffic, cycling against one-way traffic and in raised cycle lanes
  • Avoid snow storage in bike lanes where it is not safe to cycle in mixed traffic, and limit the time the snow is temporarily stored in bike lanes/cycle paths
  • Additional measures such as bicycle washing, better indoor bicycle parking and lower speed limits on selected stretches of road can also be measures that make it better to cycle in winter.
